Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early names in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the team's 10-match winless beginning to the top-flight season.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have previous links to the team - are among the names to be evaluated by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is currently at another club, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the former Luton manager - who made more than 100 of appearances for Wolves during his playing career - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The 42-year-old is reportedly enjoys backing from the Wolves directors as they begin the process of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a unexpected contender, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The ex- West Ham United player is out of work which means the club would not be required to provide any buyout fee.
